WEST POINT, NY – The Rider University women's tennis team opened the Spring with a 4-0 setback at Army West Point Saturday evening. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 0-3 on the year.
The Black Knights swept the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories at Nos. 1 and 3, while
Maria Buss (Bocholt, Germany Bischöfliches St.-Josef-Gymnasium Bocholt) and
Claire Brown (Duluth, GA/Northview) came closest to a victory with a 6-3 setback to Madison Smith and Olivia Manson at No. 2.
In singles, the Black Knights took the first three decisions in straight sets at Nos. 3, 4 and 6 to halt the match.
Laila Fishman (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) and Buss took the first sets at No. 1 and 2, respectively. Fishman took the first set against Ylan Duong, 7-5, before the second set was halted at 2-2. Buss won the first set against Emily Ruckno, 6-3, and trailed, 5-2, in the second when action was stopped.
Chloe Monachelli (Somers, NY/Somers) was also competitive at No. 5, falling 6-4 in her first sets before the match was halted in the second.
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they travel to St. John's.
