LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Rider University head baseball coach Dr. Barry Davis has announced his resignation, effective Jan. 31, Friday morning.
"Serving as the head coach here at Rider University has been an honor for the past 20 years," said Davis. "But there comes a time when you must decide to move forward personally and professionally. As difficult a decision as this is, it is the right one. I want to thank former athletic director Curt Blake for taking a chance on a guy no one else would. Following the great Sonny Pittaro was an enormous challenge in 2004, one I took very seriously. Rider, under Sonny, brought the program to new heights on the heels of the legendary Tom Petroff. I did my best to continue the legacy. Finally, I want to thank my family and friends for the continuous support they have provided. It has been a terrific ride, but it is time to move on to the next chapter. I wish Rider nothing but success in the future."
Davis, a three-time MAAC Coach of the Year (2006, 13, 15), led the Broncs to four MAAC Championships (2008, 10, 21, 23) and two MAAC regular season titles (2013, 15). In the 2023 season, his Broncs defeated 10
th-seeded Coastal Carolina in the NCAA Conway Regional, Rider's first NCAA Tournament win since the 1987 season. During the regular season that same year, the Broncs earned signature wins, topping 2022 National Runners-Up Oklahoma, 6-3, and defeating sixth-ranked Duke, 3-2, in Durham.
"Barry Davis has done a terrific job with the Rider Baseball program," said Rider Athletic Director
Don Harnum. "He and his players have represented both the university and athletic department with integrity and class while achieving consistent competitive success. Coach Davis has certainly added to the proud tradition of Rider Baseball and I thank him immensely for the numerous accomplishments and for being a trusted colleague. I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors."
Many individuals saw success during Davis' tenure, with his athletes earning 22 First-Team All-MAAC honors, 20 Second-Team All-MAAC honors, and nine major award selections. In 2023, closer Danny Kirwin became the program's first All-American since the 1995 season after going 7-2 with a 2.32 ERA and finishing third in the nation with 14 saves. Six Rider players were selected in the MLB Draft under Davis, including Nick Margevicius, who was drafted in the seventh round in 2017 before playing three seasons in the majors between the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners.
In 20 seasons with the Broncs, Davis compiled a record of 483-520-1, including a 252-209 mark in league games. Prior to coming to Lawrenceville, Davis was the head coach for 11 seasons at Gloucester County College, now Rowan College of South Jersey, followed by four years at NAIA, now NCAA Division II, Georgia Southwestern State University. In his 35 seasons, he finished with a 1054-716-7 career record across all three stops.
Davis is a member of five Halls of Fame, beginning with his induction into the Gloucester County College Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 and subsequently followed by an induction into the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. His alma mater, Bridgewater College, inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2014, the National Junior College Athletic Association Baseball Coaches enshrined Davis in their Hall of Fame in 2016, and he was inducted into the Albemarle High School Hall of Fame in 2024.
