Men's Tennis Outlasts Wagner, 4-3, in Season Opener

Matteus Froberg Dahlin wins at both singles and doubles in collegiate debut

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Freshman Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden Hersby Gymnasium) won at both singles and doubles in his collegiate debut as the Rider University men's tennis team opened the 2024-25 season with a 4-3 win over Wagner Sunday afternoon. The win was the first for new Rider Head Coach Timothy Koch. The match was the first dual of the season for both teams.

Froberg Dahlin paired with Giacomo Ghitti (Brescia, Italy/Marco Polo) on a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Joshua Zhao and Gabriele Zugarelli. But the Seahawks took victories at Nos. 1 and 2 to secure the doubles point.

In singles, Froberg Dahlin cruised to a 6-3, 6-2, victory at No. 2 over Leon Schmidt. Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) and freshman Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) also earned straight-sets singles victories. Slattery defeated Zhao, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5, while Thurgur picked up his first win as a Bronc over Vibhu Challagunda, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6. Thurgur won the final four games of his second set to secure the victory.

Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) finished off the victory with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, victory over Carlos Rodriguez Gonzalez at No. 1.

The Broncs return to action Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Monmouth for an invitational that also includes Lafayette.
