Men's Tennis Defeats Lafayette, Falls to Monmouth Wednesday

Froberg Dahlin, Thurgur win twice each in win over Leopards

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Freshmen Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden Hersby Gymnasium) and Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) each won at both singles and doubles as the Rider University men's tennis team defeated Lafayette, 5-2, on Wednesday at Monmouth. Earlier in the day, the Hawks took a 7-0 win over the Broncs. With the split, the Broncs moved to 2-1 on the season, while the matches were the first of the year for both Lafayette and Monmouth.

Froberg Dahlin and Dylan Lachmanen (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) paired on a 6-2 win over Jake Magnusson and Tyler Mahaffey at No. 2 doubles, while the Broncs secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 from Thurgur and Ibragim Turgambekov (Almaty, Kazakhstan) over Sam Gelber and Darrin Lerner. Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) and Cooper Dillon (Brisbane, Australia/Laurel Springs) battled, but fell to Nick McKenzie and Arman Ganchi, 7-5, at No. 1.

Froberg Dahlin completed his double win with a 7-6 (6), 7-5, win over Ganchi at No. 1 singles. Thurgur also won in straight sets, getting past Lerner, 6-2, 7-6 (4), at No. 3. Matthew Griscti (Madliena, Malta) and Dillon also won at Nos. 2 and 4 to secure the match victory. Griscti defeated McKenzie, 5-7, 7-5, 11-9, at No. 2, while Dillon outlasted John Owen Studdiford, 6-1, 4-6, 10-4, at No. 4.

Against Monmouth, the Hawks swept all three doubles and all six singles matches to take the 7-0 victory. Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) and Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) were most competitive in doubles, pushing Alex Sanz and Mateo Bivol at No. 1, but falling, 6-4.

Tangri and Thurgur each took a set and forced a third-set tiebreaker at Nos. 1 and 4, respectively. But the Hawks were able to pull out the win in both matches. Martinez was also competitively in a 6-4, 6-4, loss to Oleksandr Vysochenko at No. 6.

The Broncs return to action this Saturday and Sunday at the Lehigh Invitational.
