LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Fallyn Stoeckel (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) went 5-for-6, but the Rider University softball team was swept by Siena, 6-0 and 8-0, to begin a three-game MAAC series Saturday afternoon at Herb & Joan Young Field. With the sweep, Siena moves to 21-11 (7-3 MAAC), while the Broncs fall to 12-23 (5-6 MAAC).
In Game 1, the Saints pieced together a single run in the first inning and five more in the seventh to take the 6-0 win. All six runs were unearned. A dropped throw at second base on a stolen-base attempt in the first set up a run-scoring fielder's choice. The Saints' lead would remain 1-0 until an error to lead off the seventh resulted in five additional unearned tallies. The Saints did their damage on four hits, two errors and a passed ball. Rider stranded 10 baserunners in the game.
Siena scored single runs in the first and second innings and a pair of runs in the third inning of Game 2 to take a 4-0 lead. A pair of singles and a sacrifice fly did the damage in the first, before an error, a sacrifice bunt and a hot shot off
Olivia Burroughs' (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual) glove at third plated the second run in the second inning. In the third, it was two hits and a walk loading the bases, before a sacrifice fly brought home the Saints' third run. A wild pitch and errant throw on the next play plated Siena's fourth run.
The Saints' lead extended to 5-0 in the fourth on a pair of two-out singles and a stolen base. An inning later, the advantage swelled to 8-0 on a pair of RBI doubles, the second scoring two. Siena pitcher Alissa Eimont then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth to enact the mercy rule after five innings.
