Baseball Upended vs USC-Upstate 9-3

Broncs fall in opener in South Carolina

SPARTANBURG, SCBrian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/ Ridgewood) hit his first home run of the season however the Rider University baseball team would fall in their opening contest vs USC-Upstate 9-3. With the loss, Rider moves to 1-7 and USC-Upstate moves to 7-7 on the season 

Rider kicked off the scoring in the first inning as Anthony Paskell  (Solon, OH/Saint Ignatius) drew a walk to start the ball game and moments later Skettini would get his first of two RBIs on the day with a sacrifice fly putting the Broncs up 1-0. However, the Rider lead wouldn't last for long with Upstate matching the Broncs run in the bottom of the frame.

In the third inning, Erich Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)  came up clutch, driving in Matt Leahy (Woolwich, NJ/ Gloucester Catholic)  with an extra-base hit. Hartmann doubled down the right-field line scoring Leahy from first to put the Broncs up 2-1. Upstate would quickly find another answer to the Broncs' offense scoring the tying run moments later in the bottom of the third when Grant Sherrod sacrificed himself to score Daniel Gernon tying the game after three.

The Upstate offense exploded in the fifth and seventh innings scoring three runs in each to put Spartans up 8-2 after seven. 

Skettini did help the Broncs try and rally in the eighth when he hit a blast to left field getting his first home run of the year and cutting the lead to five. In the bottom of the frame, the Spartans added one more eventually sealing the contest 9-3.

- Gavin Hawkes (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) received the loss going 1.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits.
- PJ Craig (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) started for the Broncs going three innings allowing two runs on four hits. 

Broncs by the Numbers
 - Rider had eight hits in the contest with Skettini, Paskell, Hartmann, Leahy,  Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/ Gloucester Catholic), and Justin Costanzo (East Greenwich, NJ/ Gloucester Catholic | Widner) all registering hits.
- Hartmann recorded his first multi-hit game of the season.
- Lesch moved his on-base streak to seven games.
