Men's Tennis Earns Big 4-3 Road Win at Niagara to Open MAAC Play

Tangri, Turgambekov win at both singles and doubles

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) and Ibragim Turgambekov (Almaty, Kazakhstan) each won at singles and doubles as the Rider University men's tennis team picked up a big 4-3 road win to open MAAC play Friday at Niagara. With the win, the Broncs move to 4-14 (1-0 MAAC), handing Niagara (7-3, 2-1 MAAC) its first league loss.

The Broncs took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Cooper Dillon (Brisbane, Australia/Laurel Springs) and Turgambekov paired to defeat Trevor Masi and Tanner Bedard, 7-5, at No. 1, while Tangri and Giacomo Ghitti (Brescia, Italy/Marco Polo) earned a 6-2 win over Jose Maria Garcia and Vid Maric at No. 3.

While Niagara took straight-sets singles victories at Nos. 1, 3 and 5, Rider clinched the match with three-set triumphs at Nos. 2, 4 and 6. Tangri outlasted Masi, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 2, while Martinez earned a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6, victory over Garcia at No. 4. Turgambekov clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, win over Manuel Alonso at No. 6.

"Just a massive win for the program," said Rider Head Coach Tom Battaglia. "Niagara is such a solid team, one that beat us, 6-1, last year. The guys came up huge, winning the doubles point and that momentum carried over. When things got tight, the guys just believed in themselves and each other. That was nothing else but a great team win. Guys that played, guys that weren't in the lineup all supported each other. That goes a long way. Work if far from done, but we can enjoy this for a few days."

The Broncs return to action Monday, when they play host to Loyola (Md.). First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
