Women's Basketball Defeated at Canisius

BUFFALO, NY – The Rider University women's basketball team was defeated Saturday afternoon at Canisius, 73-62. The Broncs fall to 9-18 overall, and 6-12 in MAAC games, while the Golden Griffins improve to 16-12 on the season, and 11-8 in league games.

Rider opened the game on fire, with Taylor Langan (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Jefferson Township[Colgate/Millersville]) and Molly Lynch (Sea Girt, NJ/Rutgers Prep) sandwiching baskets around a three-pointer by Kaylan Deveney (Medford, NJ/Life Center Academy) for an early 7-0 lead. Leading 10-7, Lynch hit a layup, then Makayla Firebaugh (Winchester, VA/James Wood) knocked down back-to-back threes to extend the lead to 18-7. The Golden Griffins countered with a 13-0 run to take their first lead of the game and the game was tied 20-20 after 10 minutes.

Leading 38-34 early in the third, Canisius pulled away with an 11-1 lead, going on to lead 54-39 after three.

Trailing 58-42 early in the fourth, Mariona Cos-Morales (Matadepera, Spain/IES Matadepera[Casper College])  scored four, then Jessika Schiffer (Iserlohn, Germany/Deutschhaus Gymnasium Würzburg[Buffalo]) and Langan each score to trim the deficit to 58-50, but the Broncs would get no closer.

Quotes & Notes
"Obviously disappointed. I thought we just had a couple too many breakdowns on offense and defense. Four of five breakdowns this time of year can cost you. I thought we started the game really strong. Just too many breakdowns."

"We've got to connect a little bit better as far as how we want to guard certain things and make sure we're all on the same page. Our communication has to be at a high level in order for us to be able to make the adjustments we need to make and get the stops and scores that we need." – Rider Head Coach Lynn Milligan

- Canisius earns the season split for the second-straight season. The Golden Griffins lead the all-time series 35-19.
- Langan led the Broncs with 20 points and 10 rebounds, her 21st time reaching double figures and seventh time recording a double-double this season.
