Men's Tennis Edged By Saint Louis, 4-3

Slattery wins at both singles and doubles

HILTON HEAD, SCNathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) won at both singles and doubles, but the Rider University men's tennis team was edged by Saint Louis, 4-3, on Tuesday. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-13, while the Billikens are now 8-2.

The Broncs emerged with the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Slattery paired with Jake Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) to defeat Jonathan Sadowski and Declan Townsend, 6-3, at No. 1, while Cooper Dillon (Brisbane, Australia/Laurel Springs) and Jaime de Jaraiz (Las Rosas, Spain/Rafa Nadal International School) earned a 7-6 decision over Luca Lo Nardo and Valentin Vasquez at No. 3 to take the point.

In singles, the Broncs earned wins at the top two flights, with Matthew Griscti (Madliena, Malta) getting past Ryota Fukushima, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, at No. 1. Slattery also earned a 6-4, 6-4, straight sets victory over Andres Castellanos at No. 2. But the Billikens won the remaining four singles flights in straight sets to take the match victory. Grimes and Elyad Oshnavie (Asker, Norway/Asker) were highly competitive at Nos. 5 and 6. But Grimes fell to Theo Ortis, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5 and Oshnavie took a 7-5, 6-2, loss to Vasquez.

"Another heartbreaker for the men," said Rider Head Coach Tom Battaglia. "Can't get over the 3-3 hump this season. Matt and Nate played very tough today. Love the way they both battled. Really smart play for both of them. Their hard work is really paying off."

The Broncs return to action Thursday, when they face the College of Charleston.
