Baseball Falls in Finale at #11 ECU

Broncs swept in season opener

GREENVILLE, N.C – The Rider University baseball team dropped their first series of the year suffering a 7-0 loss in game three with #11 East Carolina. With the loss, Rider moves to 0-3  and ECU improves to 3-0 scoring the opening weekend series sweep over Rider.

After a scoreless first inning for both sides, ECU scored a massive frame thanks to a Dixon Williams RBI base hit that was followed up by a three-run homer from Cam Clonch to put the Pirates up 4-0 after two. Rider starter, Jake Dorety (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) was able to work out of a jam in the third, stranding the bases loaded with a ground ball to get out of the inning and end his afternoon.

ECU exploded in the fourth, with a pair of homers in the inning from Jacob Starling and Jacob Jenkins-Cowart to take a 7-0 lead.

Rider did keep ECU scoreless following the fourth, blanking the Pirates for the final four frames thanks to Clayton Poliey (Ringwood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) and Chris Montone's (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) efforts in relief.

Quotes & Notes
"A challenging weekend against a very good program. Playing teams like ECU prepares you in every way. They force you to play defense on every pitch. And you better be ready to hit. Every arm they threw made it tough. We have to learn from this series. It's up to all of us, coaches and players, to make the necessary adjustments. It's on to East Tennessee State." – Rider Baseball Head Coach Dr. Barry Davis

  • Dorety got the start and received the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in three innings of work in his collegiate debut.
  • Montone finished the day for Rider going one scoreless inning in relief.
Broncs by the Numbers
- Rider had three hits in the ball game with hits coming from Jack Winsett (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern), Matt Shepherd (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner[Rowan College of South Jersey]), and Will Gallagher (Cranford, NJ/Cranford). All three Broncs picked up their first hits of the season.

Up Next
