Volleyball Falls in MAAC Semifinals

Box Score LOUDONVILLE, NY – The third-seeded Rider University volleyball team saw its season come to an end in the MAAC Tournament Semifinals Saturday evening, falling 25-15, 28-26, 23-25, 25-22 to second-seeded Quinnipiac. The Broncs end the season at 16-17, while the Bobcats improve to 19-12.

The opening set was all Bobcats. Already leading 8-5, Quinnipiac began to pull away with a 5-0 run. The Broncs would not get within six points for the remainder of the set.

The Bobcats came out firing in set two, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Trailing 8-3, Rider fired back with a 10-2 run, including two aces during a 5-0 run on the serve of Ryley Frye (New Hope, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong[UTEP]). Down 20-16, Quinnipiac stormed back with six-straight points to take a 22-20 lead. Rider would have an answer scoring four of the next five points to earn a set point at 24-23, and the Broncs would again have set point at 25-24, but the Bobcats fought both off and went on to win the set 28-26.

Tied 8-8 in the third, the Broncs pushed ahead with a 5-0 run, including an ace from Frye. The Bobcats would pull to within one at 19-18, but holding a 21-20 lead, a kill followed by a block from Molly Rohde (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) sparked a 3-0 run that gave Rider four set points. Quinnipiac would stave off three of them before Rylah Robinson (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) got a kill to give Rider the set.

With Rider leading 8-7 in the fourth, Quinnipiac made the decisive run in the contest with an 8-1 run to go ahead 15-9. Trailing 21-13, the Broncs went down swinging as Rohde and Kiannisha Santiago (San Juan, PR/Hudson Catholic (NJ)) combined for four blocks during an 8-1 run as the Broncs pulled to within 22-21, but the Broncs were unable to tie the set, and ultimately fell in the match.

QUOTES & NOTES
"It's never fun. You're heart goes out to the players especially the seniors. It was a good match and we had our opportunities, especially in set two, and unfortunately it didn't go our way. One of our focuses today was staying in the present, so I don't think we overreacted to the first set. We just went out there and fought, and they did a good job at that." – Head Coach Jeff Rotondo
