WORCESTER, MA – The Rider University field hockey team was topped Sunday afternoon, 4-2 at Holy Cross. The Broncs fall to 5-6, while the Crusaders improve to an equal 5-6.
After allowing the game's first goal on a penalty corner midway throught the first, Rider found the equalizer midway through the second on a penalty corner of their own. After shots by
Megan Normile (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) and
Ang Borisow (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) were saved,
Katie Wuerstle (Schwenksville, PA/Perkiomen[Kent St.]) found the ball on her stick, where she delivered the equalizer. Holy Cross would once again go ahead with a goal, scoring with just 27 seconds remaining in the first half go into the break leading 2-1.
The Broncs had a chance to tie the game on a corner early in the third, but Normile's shot rang off the post, and the Crusaders took advantage scoring minutes later to extend the lead to 3-1. Late in the third, the Broncs had another prime opportunity to score, with
Semra Said (Mannheim, Germany/Feudenheim Gymnasium Mannheim) drawing a penalty stroke, but the shot was saved to keep the lead at two.
With just over five minutes remaining in the game, the Broncs took advantage of the penalty corner again.
Olivia Machiavelli (Madrid, Spain/International School Sek el Castillo) made the insert directly to Normile who ripped a shot just inside the near post to trim the Holy Cross lead to just one, but the Crusaders would add on a late insurance goal to provide the final score.
