HEMPSTEAD, NY – The Rider University field hockey team got a strong non-conference victory Sunday afternoon, topping Hofstra 3-1. The Broncs improve to 7-6 with the win, while the Pride fall to 2-10.
The Broncs would finally open the scoring late in the second quarter.
Katie Wuerstle (Schwenksville, PA/Perkiomen[Kent St.]) played a long pass into the circle where it found the stick of
Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra). Perales dribbled around the goalie then put the ball in the back of the cage to give Rider an early lead. Minutes later, the Broncs would score again, this time on the penalty corner.
Semra Said (Mannheim, Germany/Feudenheim Gymnasium Mannheim) played the ball to the front of the goal mouth where
Lyric Scott (Union, NJ/Union) would find a way to put the ball into the goal to extend the lead to 2-0. The Pride would answer less than a minute later scoring off a corner of their own, punching home a rebound to make it a one-goal game at the half.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Broncs wasted no time in the fourth putting the game away.
Olivia Machiavelli (Madrid, Spain/International School Sek el Castillo), dribbled into the circle and spun past the Hofstra goalie before scoring the insurance goal, giving Rider a 3-1 lead and producing what would be the eventual final score.
