Marist Defeats Men's Basketball

Powell scores 15, Weeks Jr. adds 14

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Allen Powell (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle College H.S.) scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half, but the Rider University men's basketball team fell at Marist, 83-60, Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 5-12 (2-4 MAAC), while the Red Foxes improved to 8-6 (3-2 MAAC).

The Red Foxes scored the first four points of the game and led throughout. The Broncs took Marist's initial punch and stayed with the Red Foxes, pulling to within three on a T.J. Weeks Jr. (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken Catholic [UMass]) three-pointer just prior to the 12-minute mark. But Marist scored the next five points and methodically worked its advantage up to 15, 39-24, at the half. Weeks Jr. and Mervin James (St. Thomas, USVI/Pebblebrook [North Alabama]) led the Broncs with eight points apiece after 20 minutes.

Rider opened the second half on a 10-2 run, including the first five points from Powell and a Corey McKeithan (Windsor, CT/Windsor) three to punctuate the run, cutting the deficit to seven. But the Broncs would draw no closer, with Marist eventually working its lead up to as many as 27 points in the final minutes.
