Women's Tennis Earns 4-3 Road MAAC Win at Marist

Broncs win four of six singles flights to earn pivotal league win

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Rider University women's tennis team won four of six singles flights to pull out a 4-3 victory at Marist Friday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs improve to 4-11 (2-2 MAAC), while the Red Foxes drop to 2-12 (0-4 MAAC).

The Red Foxes jumped out to the early lead with wins in two of three doubles matches. Andrea Sydow (Las Querenzas, Mexico/Prepa Net ITESM) and Raquel Bolin (Plantation, FL/Xceed Preparatory Academy) earned a 7-5 win at No. 3 over Isabella Tonuzi and Andriana Zaphiris. But the Red Foxes took the top two flights and the point.

But singles was a different story. The Red Foxes took victories at two of the top three flights, with Agnese Ceccarelli (Arezzo, Italy/Liceo Classico Francesco Petrarca) taking a win by retirement over Deana Giambo at No. 2 after taking a 4-1 lead in the first set.

But Sydow, Jett Coetzee (Miami, FL/Miami Palmetto Senior) and Samantha Killin (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) would bring the match home with three-set wins at Nos. 4, 5 and 6. Sydow battled back from down a set to defeat Ellen Zureick, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, while Coetzee defeated Tonuzi, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 5. Killin then clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, win over Zaphiris at No. 6.

"Amazing fight from them today," said Rider Head Coach Tom Battaglia. "I'm beyond proud of the effort they put in. They dropped the first set on three singles courts and still came back to win those matches. Just goes to show when you push yourself, you will always be capable of great things."

The Broncs return to action Monday, when they travel to Loyola (Md.). First serve from Baltimore is scheduled for 2 p.m.
