Samantha Killin (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) won at No. 5 singles, but the Rider University women's tennis team was defeated at Delaware State, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 3-11, while the Hornets are now 9-6-1.
The Hornets swept the doubles point to begin the match, taking 6-3 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 and a 6-0 decision at No. 3. Delaware State clinched the match with straight-sets wins at the top four singles flights.
Leila Koster (Duluth, GA/Rivers Academy) played the most competitive match of the group, falling to Kit Yi Kaye Au-Yeung at No. 1, 7-5, 6-3.
Killin won her match at No. 5 in straight sets over Lucia Corte, 6-2, 6-4. also took all six singles flights in straight sets.
Raquel Bolin (Plantation, FL/Xceed Preparatory Academy) also forced a third set at No. 6 singles, but fell to Baluck Deang, 6-4, 3-6, 13-11.
"Came out with really good energy against a talented squad," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "Scores don't reflect the overall effort. Had many games go to deuce and we just couldn't convert. We played those points well, just on the other side of bad luck."
The Broncs return to action Friday, when they travel to MAAC foe Marist. First serve from Poughkeepsie, NY, is scheduled for 2 p.m.
