Men's Tennis Earns Convincing 5-2 Win at Loyola

Four Broncs win at both singles and doubles

BALTIMORE, MD – Four Broncs won at both singles and doubles as the Rider University men's tennis team earned a 5-2 road win at Loyola (Md.) Monday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs move to 8-12 on the year, while the Greyhounds drop to 6-12.

The Broncs swept the doubles point to begin the match. Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) and Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) took care of Nick Haggar and Ryan Boland at No. 1, 6-1, while the Broncs' duos at Nos. 2 and 3 both won by 6-2 scores. Stavros Hadjivarnava (Moutagiaka, Cyrus/British College of Gava) and Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) won at No. 2 over Oliver Davey and Harry Zeiders, while Dylan Lachmanen (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Jakes Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) defeated George Cavo and Matt Cardano at No. 3.

In singles, Martinez pushed the Broncs' lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Cavo at No. 3. Loyola got back into it with Cardano's 6-2, 6-2, win over Slattery at No. 1, before the Broncs closed out the victory with wins from Tangri and Hadjivarnava at Nos. 2 and 4. Tangri defeated Davey, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2, while Hadjivarnava got past Dylan Koziol, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, at No. 4 to clinch the match. Grimes pushed the margin to 5-1 with a 7-5, 6-3, win over Zeiders at No. 6. With the match already in hand, No. 5 came down to a third-set 10-point tiebreaker that Boland took over Pablo Salar Carrera (Barcelona, Spain IES Jaume Balmes), 7-5, 3-6, 10-8.

"Really good performance, especially coming off back-to-back losses," said Rider Head Coach Tom Battaglia. "We set the tone early with what is probably our best doubles of the year. Came out in singles and stuck to our game plan. Great effort overall."

The Broncs return home for the final two duals of the regular season Friday and Saturday. Rider faces Siena Friday at 12:45 p.m., before taking on Niagara at noon on Saturday.
