BROOKVILLE, NY –
Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) won at both singles and doubles, but the Rider University men's tennis team fell at LIU, 4-2, Friday. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 6-10, while the Sharks are now 5-11.
Martinez paired with
Jaime de Jaraiz (Las Rosas, Spain/Rafa Nadal International School) to defeat Philip Hilble and Ales D'Anna, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 doubles. Combined with
Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) and
Dhruv Tangri's (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) 6-4 win at No. 1 over Danila Ishchanka and Akhil Indrabalan, the Broncs took the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
Martinez then got past Sergio Fernandez Romera, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. But the Sharks took the remaining four singles flights that were completed to clinch the 4-2 victory.
Pablo Salar Carrera (Barcelona, Spain IES Jaume Balmes) battled in a three-set setback to Indrabalan at No. 5, falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Stavros Hadjivarnava (Moutagiaka, Cyrus/British College of Gava) also played a close match, falling to D'Anna at No. 4, 6-3, 7-5.
"Tight during critical moments. We need to learn to relax and just play," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "They put a great deal of pressure on themselves, which causes them to be stressed when we need them the most. Lesson learned and hopefully we will come out of the gate strong on Sunday."
The Broncs return to action Sunday, when they travel to Quinnipiac. First serve from Guilford Racquet Club in Guilford, CT, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
