GUILFORD, CT –
Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) won at both singles and doubles and the Broncs won five of six singles flights as the Rider University men's tennis team earned a 5-2 road win over perennial MAAC contender Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon at Guilford Racquet Club. The win is the Broncs' (7-10, 3-0 MAAC) first over Quinnipiac (8-9, 2-1 MAAC) since the Bobcats joined MAAC in 2013-14. In the stretch, the Bobcats had won all eight matches by 7-0 final scores.
Doubles was tightly-contested, with the Bobcats pulling out the point. Martinez and
Jaime de Jaraiz (Las Rosas, Spain/Rafa Nadal International School) paired to defeat Ayato Arakaki and Donovan Brown, 6-4, at No. 2. But the Bobcats took the remaining two flights, including a 6-4 decision at No. 1, to clinch the point.
Singles play started inauspiciously for the Broncs, with the Bobcats taking four of six first sets. However, Rider stormed back with three-set victories at Nos. 1-3, another two straight-sets victories at Nos. 4 and 5, and the lone setback coming in a third-set tie-breaker with the match already in hand.
Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) came back to defeat Arakaki, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1, while
Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) also came back to defeat Andreas Whalen-Merediz, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2. Martinez capped the top-three comebacks with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, win over Shaurya Sood at No. 3.
Stavros Hadjivarnava (Moutagiaka, Cyrus/British College of Gava) and
Pablo Salar Carrera (Barcelona, Spain IES Jaume Balmes) won their singles matches at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, in straight sets. Hadjivarnava got past Donovan Brown, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 4, while Salar Carrera defeated Kemal Karagozoglu, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5. The lone Quinnipiac singles win came from Csanad Nyaradi over
Jake Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) at No. 6, 7-5, 5-7, 11-9.
"After dropping the doubles point, they really put forth an amazing effort," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "They dropped the first sets on 1, 2 and 3, but they came roaring back. Credit to our guys not losing hope when things looked bleak. Again, very proud of this group and the effort they are putting in."
The Broncs return to action Friday, when they travel to Marist. First serve from Poughkeepsie, NY, is scheduled for 3 p.m.
