EMMITSBURG, MD –
Daniela Naves (Alvarado, Mexico/Club Med Academies) and
Avery Oppenheim (Marietta, GA/Walton/Georgia Connections) each earned wins at both singles and doubles as the Rider University women's tennis team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs improve to 3-8 (1-1 MAAC), while the Mountaineers fall to 4-6 (1-2 MAAC).
Naves and Oppenheim paired on a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Ryan McCarthy and Adriana Barney, while
Samantha Killin (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and
Sofia Gutierrez (Miami, FL/Palmetto Senior) finished off the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-3) win over Victoria Papadopoulou and Shirley Liang at No. 2.
Naves and Oppenheim both won their singles matches in straight sets. Naves took a 6-3, 6-1, win over Barney at No. 3, while Oppenheim won by the same score over Ana Alvarez-Storni at No. 6. Two of the remaining matches went to a third set, with each team winning one. It was
Agnese Ceccarelli (Arezzo, Italy/Liceo Classico Francesco Petrarca) pulling out the decisive three-setter for the Broncs, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, over Amber Policare at No. 2.
"Not sure how many of these 4-3 matches I can take!" said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "A lot of credit to both teams for staying positive during the worst of times. Exciting day for sure, but we need to clean a few things up. We can't keep coming out slow, only to dig ourselves out of a hole. Only so many times you can do that before you run into the player who can capitalize on our mistakes. A fun bus ride home from Maryland is always a good thing."
The Broncs return to action Thursday, when they travel to Temple. First serve from Philadelphia is scheduled for 2 p.m.
