EMMITSBURG, MD –
Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) won at both singles and doubles as the Rider University men's tennis team won its second-straight MAAC match with a 4-3 decision over Mount St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs move to 6-9 (2-0 MAAC), while the Mountaineers slip to 3-10 (0-3 MAAC).
Slattery paired with
Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) to defeat Filippos Zachiotis and Jarrett Karnibad, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles. But the Mountaineers took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
Jaime de Jaraiz (Las Rosas, Spain/Rafa Nadal International School) and
Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) were narrowly edged in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6), by Christos Dagklis and Marcel Cronin in the decisive match at No. 3.
But the Broncs stormed back to win with victories in four of six singles flights. Slattery got past Elliot Stevens, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1, while Martinez also won in straight sets over Dagklis at No. 3, 6-3, 6-2.
Pablo Salar Carrera (Barcelona, Spain IES Jaume Balmes) got past Pablo Martinez Zuccardi, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5, while the match was ultimately decided on the racket of
Stavros Hadjivarnava (Moutagiaka, Cyrus/British College of Gava), who battled back from down a set to defeat Giovanni Abriola, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 4.
"Not sure how many of these 4-3 matches I can take!" said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "A lot of credit to both teams for staying positive during the worst of times. Exciting day for sure, but we need to clean a few things up. We can't keep coming out slow, only to dig ourselves out of a hole. Only so many times you can do that before you run into the player who can capitalize on our mistakes. A fun bus ride home from Maryland is always a good thing."
The Broncs return to action Friday, when they travel to Brookville, NY, to take on LIU. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
