LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Avery Oppenheim (Marietta, GA/Walton/Georgia Connections) earned a three-set victory at No. 6 singles, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Fairfield, 6-1, Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-8 (0-1 MAAC), while the Stags improve to 5-7 (1-0 MAAC).
The Stags took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3.
Samantha Killin (Warwick, NY/Warwich Valley) and
Sofia Gutierrez (Miami, FL/Palmetto Senior) led, 4-3, at No. 2, when their match was halted.
Fairfield took the top five singles flights in straight sets, with Gutierrez coming closest to a victory with a 6-2, 6-4, setback to Aina March at No. 5. Oppenheim got past Francesca Karman, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, at No. 6 for the Broncs' point in the match.
"We aren't there yet in our belief that we can play with anyone in this conference," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "I thought we played nervous most of the time, and when you do that, you just stop moving your feet. We need to be better with the things we can control."
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they travel to Emmitsburg, MD, to take on league foe Mount St. Mary's. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
