LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Stavros Hadjivarnava (Moutagiaka, Cyrus/British College of Gava) and
Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) each won at both singles and doubles as the Rider University men's tennis team pulled off arguably its biggest upset in the program's 25-plus years in the MAAC. The Broncs defeated MAAC Preseason favorite Fairfield, 4-3, Sunday afternoon, defeating the Stags for the first time in at least 19 years.
The Broncs took the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Hadjivarnava and
Jake Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) defeated Keean Shah and Sam Hodges at No. 2, while Martinez and
Jaime de Jaraiz (Las Rosas, Spain/Rafa Nadal International School) got past Alex Aguiar and Will O'Brien at No. 3 to take the first point of the match.
All three of Rider's singles wins to clinch the match came in three sets.
Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) defeated Tolunay Sumer, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), at No. 2, while Martinez got past Hodges with a dominant third set, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 3. After falling in the first set, 4-6, Hadjivarnava won the second and third sets, both by 6-4 margins, over Shah at No. 4. The Stags took the remaining three singles matches in straight sets, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Broncs.
"While this is an amazing win, and historical, it doesn't come as a shock," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "Our efforts are focused around belief. The coaching staff has always known we can compete at this level – it's getting the guys to believe it as well. It's a great day and one that should be celebrated, but once the clock turns 12, we need to look forward to practice tomorrow."
The Broncs return to action Tuesday, when they play host to Sacred Heart. First serve is scheduled for noon.
