Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Topped by Manhattan

RIVERDALE, NY – The Rider University women's basketball team could not overcome a pair of extended runs Thursday night at Manhattan, falling 69-52 in Draddy Gym. The Broncs fall to 8-20 overall and 5-14 in MAAC play. The Jaspers close out the regular season at 13-16 overall, and 10-10 in league games.

The first quarter went back and forth, featuring five lead changes, including a pair coming on three-pointers by Jessika Schiffer (Iserlohn, Germany/Deutschhaus Gymnasium Würzburg [Buffalo]) before ending tied 11-11.

Tied 16-16, Manhattan went on a 10-0 run, that extended to 16-2 to close out the half, taking control of the game. The Jaspers would lead 32-18 at the break.

Down 34-18, A three by Makayla Firebaugh (Winchester, VA/James Wood) followed by a bucket from Victoria Toomey (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) cut the lead to 11. Another Schiffer three would get the Broncs back within single digits late in the third, but Manhattan scored the final seven points of the quarter and led 53-37 after three.

The Jaspers opened the fourth scoring the first five points in the quarter, extending the run to 12-0. Manhattan would lead by as many as 24, before Rider fought back to produce the final score.

Quotes & Notes
"The second quarter obviously killed us. We turned the ball over and didn't execute. Unfortunately, they were live ball turnovers and they capitalized on them."

"Offensively, we were a little bit out of flow. We didn't get the inside looks we've been getting the last few games for a multitude of reasons. We were never able to make that one run."

"Our defense was there in phases tonight, which is unfortunate this time of year. On the road, you need to defend, and in that second quarter, we really gave them a lot of buckets from our mistakes." – Head Coach Lynn Milligan

- The Jaspers sweep the season series and now hold a 36-20 all-time edge over the Broncs.
- Firebaugh led the Broncs with 15 points, her 19th game in double figures this season.
- Schiffer added 14 points for her eighth game with double digits this year.
- With the loss, the Broncs are locked in to the 10-seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament. Marist is locked in as the seven-seed and will be the Broncs opponent in the first round.
