Box Score SYRACUSE, NY –
Jett Coetzee (Miami, FL/Miami Palmetto Senior) and
Sofia Gutierrez (Miami, FL/Palmetto Senior) won their singles matches, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell at Colgate, 5-2, Saturday evening. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 1-4, while the Raiders improve to 3-3.
The Raiders swept the doubles point to take the 1-0 lead.
Daniela Naves (Alvarado, Mexico/Club Med Academies) and
Agnese Ceccarelli (Arezzo, Italy/Liceo Classico Francesco Petrarca) pushed Katerina Atallah and Natalie Fuller at No. 2, but fell, 6-4, while
Samantha Killin (Warwick, NY/Warwich Valley) and Gutierrez were also competitive at No. 3, but fell to Sasha Herman and Jordan Ben-Shmuel, 6-3.
Coetzee picked up her singles win over Ben-Shmuel, taking the first set, 7-6, before her opponent retired early in the second. Gutierrez earned a three-set victory over Atallah at No. 5, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
"Slow start out of the game, but we played very well towards the end," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "Big wins from Jett and Sofia really showed us that they are playing much bigger than first-year players. Leila fought hard until the end. Really pleased with the effort in singles for sure."
The Broncs return to action in upstate New York tomorrow, when they travel to Binghamton. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
