Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Career-Highs Not Enough for Women's Basketball Sunday

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Despite a career-high 24 points from Raphaela Toussaint (Kingston, Ontario/Lincoln Prep) and a Division I program-record 13 assists from Amanda Mobley (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh), the Rider University women's basketball team fell 71-56 to Manhattan Sunday afternoon. The Broncs fall to 6-18 on the season, and 3-12 in MAAC play. The Jaspers improve to 10-14 on the year, and 7-8 in league play.

Both offenses started slow in the first quarter. Toussaint carried Rider in the quarter, scoring 10 of the Broncs' 12 points as the teams were tied 12-12 after one.

In the second, Toussaint knocked down a three, followed by a jumper from Molly Lynch (Sea Girt, NJ/Rutgers Prep) to put Rider on top 17-14. Tied 21-21, Manhattan went on a 7-0 run, the largest for either team in the game, and never trailed again. The Broncs closed out the half with buckets by Victoria Toomey (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) and Toussaint and trailed at the break 31-27.

Manhattan slowly built the lead in the third, extending the lead to 11 on Dee Dee Davis' deep three pointer at the third-quarter buzzer, making the score 52-41.

Down 55-45, Rider went on a 7-1 run, led by four points from Toussaint to close the gap to 56-52, but Manhattan immediately responded with an 11-1 run that put the game out of reach.

Quotes & Notes
"Disappointed with the loss today. It was a weird game. I felt like the score was closer than it looks. They just hit a couple of big shots. Every time we got it to five or six, they stepped up and hit a big shot, and kept us at arm's length. I felt like there was going to be a point there when we were going to make our run, and it just didn't."

"I'm happy with our effort. Raphie and Vic established themselves really well in the paint. To have our two post players score the way they did against one of the biggest teams in the league is something I'm excited about."

"Push comes to shove, we got beat up a little bit on the boards, and I know it sounds simple, but we didn't make enough shots." – Head Coach Lynn Milligan

"We knew coming in the we needed to keep them off the boards, and we were able to do that for a majority of the game, but at points there, they just got through."

"We have to make sure we have all five people crashing the boards and getting a body on everybody. Sometimes we get lost not finding the people crashing from the outside."
– Senior Forward Victoria Toomey

"I'm just staying in the gym and making sure I have the same routine every single day so that I can stay consistent. Today, I just took what the defense gave me." – Junior Forward Raphaela Toussaint

- Manhattan extends its lead in the all-time series to 35-20.
- Toussaint's career-high 24 points led the Broncs and is her 16th game in double figures this season. Toomey added 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting, tying her career high as she reached double digits for the ninth time this season.
- Mobley's 13 assists are the most by a Bronc in the D-I era (post 1983), passing Michele Warriner and Stella Johnson, who each posted 12. Rider's program record is 15, set by both Mary Ellen Baynes and Lisa Federici during the 1981-82 season.
- Mobley's first assist Sunday was the 500th of her career, and the graduate student later passed Federici for second on Rider's career assist list. Mobley ended the game at 512 and now trails just Baynes' 632.
