Wrestling Travels to the Midwest for Battle vs Indiana and SIUe

Broncs take on Hoosiers and Cougars to kick off dual season

What You Need To Know
Rider University's Wrestling Team begins their dual season in the Midwest as they battle with Indiana and SIUe.

Last Time Out
-Colton Washleski and #28 Richie Koehler led the Broncs at the Princeton Open as both finished 2nd in their respective weight classes to kick off the 2023-24 campaign. 
-Six Broncs total found themselves on the podium in the season-opening event in Jadwin Gym as Washleski and Koehler were joined by Azeem Bell, Michael Wilson, Jake Silverstein, and #30 David Szuba on Sunday afternoon.

Broncs in the Rankings
- Rider ranks four wrestlers in the Intermat national rankings with #28 Richie Koehler, #25 McKenzie Bell, #20 Quinn Kinner, and #29 David Szuba.

Big Kinner
- Quinn Kinner secured his second NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022-23, finishing the year with a 24-9 record in his first season at 149. Kinner was able to battle back through the blood rounds at the MAC Championships, finishing third to secure his spot at NCAAs. 
- The Ohio State transfer has been a dominant piece for the Broncs since coming over from OSU where he posted a 38-10 record over two seasons at Ohio State, including a redshirt year as a true freshman in 2018-19.
- The Mullica Hill native returns to the Garden State where he was one of the most impressive wrestlers in the state at Kingsway Regional High School where he won two state titles for the Red Dragons. 

Kingsway Connection
- Kinner and Bell return to action on the same mat after wrestling together at Kingsway Regional in South Jersey.
- Bell was a three-time New Jersey State Place Winner amassing over 150 wins as a Red Dragon
- Kinner was a two-time NJ state champion finishing his career as one of the most decorated wrestlers in school history.

History vs Indiana
-The Broncs and Hoosiers will meet for the first time on Friday.

About the Hoosiers 
-Indiana Wrestling began their season last weekend at The Battle at The Citadel invitational tournament with a first-place finish scoring 118.5 team points.
--Seven Indiana wrestlers placed with three champions. Dan Fongaro (141), Graham Rooks (149), and Gabe Sollars (197) all won their brackets.
- Indiana finished 8-5 last year with a 3-5 record in B1G duals
- Four Indiana wrestlers qualified for NCAAs last season with DJ Washington, Graham Rooks, Derek Gilcher, and Jacob Bullock returning in 2023-24.

History vs SIUe
- Rider meets SIUe for the third time in program history on Sunday, with Rider holding a 2-0 edge in the all-time series.
- The Broncs pulled out a close 21-19 decision last year in Edwardsville.
- Rider took four of the first five bouts over SIUe taking a 14-4 lead in team scoring and were able to close things out with the bout at 197, which Ethan Laird was able to seal with the tech fall victory.

About the Cougars
- Six SIUE wrestlers completed the Maryville Open in the top four in their respective weight classes.
- SIUE wrestling opened the 2023-24 season at the State Farm Center, dropping a 28-7 decision to Illinois.
- SIUe finished 6-8 last season with a 2-7 record in MAC duals and finished 10th at the MAC Championships.
- Three Cougars qualified for NCAAs last season, however only Caleb Tyus returns in 2023-24.

Get Some MACtion
-The Broncs are coming off a strong season in 2023 where the Broncs were named Co-MAC East Division Champions going 9-5 in Duals and 6-1 in the MAC.
- Rider returns two NCAA qualifiers from a season ago with McKenzie Bell and Quinn Kinner.
- Rider was selected to finish fourth as the Mid-American Conference (MAC) announced its 2023-24 Preseason Poll on Wednesday. The league also announced their preseason rankings as compiled by WrestleStat, with Richie Koehler, McKenzie Bell, and Quinn Kinner all being ranked second overall in their weight classes. Rider finished 5th at the MAC Championships last season.

The Hangey Files
- John Hangey returns for his seventh season as Rider's Head Coach. The 2020 MAC Co-Coach of the Year has posted a 50-29 dual record with 22 of his wrestlers qualifying for NCAA's in his first six years.
- Hangey was a Division I All American for the Broncs, finishing fourth in the nation at 190 pounds in his senior season in 1993. He was also a three-time conference champion, three-time NCAA Qualifier and the only Bronc to ever win a Midlands Championship. He is also a member of the Rider Athletics Hall of Fame.
