Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

James' Career Game Not Enough as Maryland Defeats Men's Basketball

James scores career-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting

COLLEGE PARK, MD Mervin James (St. Thomas, USVI/Pebblebrook [North Alabama]) scored a career-high 28 points and added eight rebounds, but the Rider University men's basketball team fell at Maryland, 103-76, Tuesday night at XFINITY Center. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 1-5, while the Terrapins are now 4-3.

The opening minutes were played evenly to an 8-8 tie, with Allen Powell (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle College HS), Corey McKeithan (Windsor, CT/Windsor), Tariq Ingraham (Philadelphia, PA/Bonner-Prendergast [Wake Forest]) and JT Langston Jr. (Fort Wayne, IN/San Gabriel Academy [East Los Angeles College]) each scoring a bucket for the Broncs.

But the whistles began to go heavily against the Broncs, to the tune of an 18-9 disparity in the period. Maryland made 15-of-26 attempts from the floor and was shown the free throw line for 32 first-half attempts, making 21. Despite two fouls in the first three minutes of play, James scored all of his 11 points and grabbed six of his seven rebounds in the first period after picking up the second foul without being whistled for another prior to halftime.

The Broncs drew to within 20 points twice in the second half, but could get no closer.

Quotes & Notes
"Our guys battle. I'll give them that."

(On the foul discrepancy) "Some of it is that (Maryland is) just bigger, faster, stronger. They were getting calls that we weren't getting."

"Corey and Mervin are the only two starters who've really battled and performed to the level that we thought they would. The other guys have not. Just being honest. They've not done it thus far. Therefore, I can't continue to wait on them. We've got to start making some lineup changes and find some guys that are coming off the bench that are willing to give us more energy and what we're looking for until those guys figure it out." – Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett

- Rider and Maryland have met five times in the two programs' histories, with the Terps taking all five meetings. The most recent meeting prior to tonight came on Nov. 20, 2015, a 65-58 Maryland win. The series began in 1991-92 and the first three meetings came in the 90's.
- The Broncs were playing their fifth in a six-game road trip.
- The game was the Broncs' second of three against a Big 10 opponent this season (Nebraska, Nov. 13; Penn State, Dec. 29).
- Rider's last win over a Big 10 program came Dec. 22, 2017, at Penn State on Frederick Scott's buzzer-beating three-pointer.
