POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Rider University Women's Tennis freshman
Laila Fishman (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) went 3-0 on the day and fellow first-year student-athlete
Katie Bourke (Wilmington, NC/Grandview Preparatory School) picked up her first collegiate victory as the Broncs competed at Friday's Marist Invite.
"Great getting a lot of match play in," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "It was important to see them implement the strategies we are working on in practice. We just have to get them to believe in themselves so we can have long-term success."
Fishman and
Andrea Sydow (Las Querenzas, Mexico/Prepa Net ITESM) paired to earn a 6-1 No. 2 doubles win over Binghamton's Abby Ackroyd and Maria Pereira, while Bourk's victory came at No. 3 singles against the Bearcats, defeating Pereria, 6-1, 3-6, 10-6.
Avery Oppenheim (Marietta, GA/Walton/Georgia Connections) also earned a 7-6, 6-1, win over Loren Cuomo at the top singles flight, while
Elle Catanzarite (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and
Sofia Gutierrez (Miami, FL/Palmetto Senior) also earned a doubles win in the match.
Fishman would add another doubles win with
Samantha Killin (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), 6-2, over Caterina Assi and Jane Wright of Marist. Killin also picked up a three-set victory over Akanksha Sreenivas, 6-2, 0-6, 10-5.
Finally, against NJIT, Fishman accounted for the Broncs' lone victory, a 6-0, 6-4, singles victory over Luisa Hepcal Barcan at No. 3.
