WEST POINT, NY –
Leila Koster (Duluth, GA/Rivers Academy) and
Sofia Gutierrez (Miami, FL/Palmetto Senior) won a pair of close three-set singles decisions, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell in its Spring opener Friday afternoon at Army West Point, 5-2. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 1-2, while the Black Knights moved to 1-1.
The Black Knights swept the doubles point to take the 1-0 lead, before winning on each of the first four singles courts to finish and clinch the match victory. But Koster then finished her 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, victory at top singles over Carolyn Ahn and Gutierrez likewise earned a three-set victory with a third-set tiebreak at No. 4, defeating Sophie McKenzie, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
Army West Point won the remaining singles matches in straight sets, with
Daniela Naves (Alvarado, Mexico/Club Med Academies) battling hard at No. 2, but falling, 6-2, 7-6, to Jenna Sabile.
The Broncs return to action next Friday, Jan. 27, when they travel to NJIT for a 4 p.m. first serve.
