LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University field hockey team suffered its first setback of the season Friday night, falling 1-0 in double overtime to Appalachian State in a defensive battle. The Broncs fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers improve to 3-0.
After each team scored nine goals in their first two games, it was the defenses that were on full display Friday. Rider had its best chance to get on the board in the second quarter. The Broncs drew eight penalty corners in the quarter and put several shots on cage, but App State goalie Addie Clark made three saves in the quarter to send the game into the half at 0-0.
App State saw its best chance to score in regulation come with 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers drew a corner, then worked the ball to Rider goalie
Kaitlyn Tomas' (Campbellville, Ontario/Appleby College) right. Tomas stacked the pads to make the save as the final seconds ran off the clock to send the game to overtime.
After a scoreless ten minutes, the game entered the second extra session. Two minutes into the second overtime, the Mountaineers got the ball into the circle and ripped a shot that deflected off a Rider stick in front before crossing the goal line to give App State the victory.
Quotes & Notes

"We kept staying motivated, and our bench really helped us hearing them cheer for us is a really big thing to keep that fire going, especially going into overtime."
– Senior Goalie Kaitlyn Tomas
"I was really happy with our performance. We matched their intensity and they're a really good team. It came down to who could get a ball around the goalie instead of through them."
"In a game like this, it comes down to who wants it more in that specific moment when it's happening. We had our moments that we didn't capitalize on. They had an opportunity at the end and they got the ball in the net."
