Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early Penn Goals Too Much For Men's Soccer to Overcome in 2-1 Loss

Skrocki scores first goal of the season

PHILADELPHIATom Skrocki (Havertown, PA) scored his first goal of the season, but the Rider University men's soccer team couldn't overcome two early Penn goals in a 2-1 loss Friday night. With the setback, the Broncs slip to 0-3, while the Quakers won their season opener.

Penn scored in the 5th and 8th minutes to build its lead. Rider keeper Guillaume Veinante (Bayonne, France/Faculte des métier de Rennes) made the initial stop before Leo Burney knocked in the rebound at the 4:14 mark. At the 7:54 mark, Mateo Zazueta pushed the Quakers' lead to 2-0.

Rider responded with Skrocki's goal at the 37:55 mark. Off of a corner kick, Lenny Cidolit (Montpellier, France/Montpellier Univ.) tracked the ball down outside the far, left post and re-centered the ball in front to Skrocki who knocked it in from close range. However, the second half was played scoreless and Penn came away with the victory.

Quotes & Notes
"We dug ourselves in a hole again with a bad start. Fouls in the back and giveaways are killing us. Penn is a really good team and no disrespect to them. But I thought we had the better of the play for the final 65 minutes. The road doesn't get easier at Rutgers, but it is going to pay off soon." – Rider Head Coach Charlie Inverso

- The Broncs and Quakers met for the fourth time, with Penn holding a 3-1 lead in the all-time series. The Quakers have won the last three since a Rider win in 1981.
- Veinante took the loss in goal, making four saves.
- Veinante, Regis Dulck (Strasbourg, France/Univ. of Strasbourg), Lenny Cidolit (Montpellier, France/Montpellier Univ.) and Guillaume Sarrabayrouse (Toulose, France/Pierre Paul Riquet) each played all 90 minutes and have played all 270 minutes through three games this season.
- The Broncs were playing without the services of reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, Zaki Alibou (Meknes, Morocco/Meknes), for the second-straight game.

Broncs By The Numbers
- Skrocki's goal was the first of the year of the Broncs and the second of the sophomore back's career.
- Cidolit now has three assists in his two-season stint at Rider.
- Penn took a 13-10 edge in shots, including a 6-2 margin in shots on goal.
- The Quakers also took six corner kicks to the Broncs' four.

Up Next
- The Broncs return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Piscataway to take on Rutgers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
