LOCK HAVEN, PA – The Rider University field hockey team played an instant classic Sunday afternoon, ultimately falling 3-2 to Lock Haven. The Broncs fall to 3-3 on the season, while the Bald Eagles remain unbeaten at 7-0.
The Broncs got on the board early in the first quarter, taking advantage of a counter-attack opportunity.
Sierra Giuliano (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) brought the ball into the circle and fired a shot that was saved by the Lock Haven goalie. The deflection went right on to the stick of
Abby Hartwell (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Regional), who tapped the ball into the vacated net to open the scoring.
The Bald Eagles found the equalizer in the second quarter, putting plenty of traffic in front of the Rider goal, and scoring on a tipped shot that found its way to the back of the goal.
Early in the third, Lock Haven took possession at the top of the circle and took a reverse chip shot that was headed for the top left corner.
Kaitlyn Tomas (Campbellville, Ontario/Appleby College) got her stick on it, but the deflected ball trickled across the line to give the Bald Eagles the lead.
The Broncs would be the ones to tie the game in the fourth. Rider played a long ball into the circle that found the stick of
Indy Zoontjens (Hilversum, Netherlands/Alberdingk Thijm College). The freshman slipped the ball by the goalie to even the game.
In the waning seconds of regulation, the Bald Eagles cleared the ball out of their defensive end. The ball got through everyone and on to the stick of Alyssa Endrick, who dribbled around the goalie then converted a low angle shot with just eight seconds remaining to give Lock Haven the victory.
