Women's Soccer Draws at St. Francis Brooklyn, 1-1

Smith scores equalizer for first-career goal

BROOKLYN, NY – Freshman Olivia Smith (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) scored her first collegiate goal, the equalizer in the 68th minute, as the Rider University women's soccer team drew with St. Francis Brooklyn, 1-1, Sunday afternoon at Brooklyn Bridge Park. With the tie, the Broncs wrap up non-conference play at 3-2-2, while the Terriers are now 1-3-3.

Rider goalkeeper Ellie Sciancalepore (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) came up big in the 33rd minute, stopping a penalty kick and the resulting rebound attempt. But the Terriers still managed to come away with a one-goal lead at the break, as Jamie-Lyn Shimamoto found the back of the net, deflecting it off a Rider back toward the center of goal as time expired on the period.

In the 68th minute, the Broncs were awarded a free kick from five yards atop the 18-yard box. Smith blasted it with her right foot inside the right post to beat St. Francis keeper Klil Keshwar and equalize. The Terriers would generate chances in the 80th minute with a pair of corner kicks, but their best chance knocked off the crossbar. Similarly, the Broncs' Hailey Russell (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) fired a shot from well outside the 18-yard box that nearly found the back of the net at the 82-minute mark. But it clanged off the right post.

- Rider had won the first two meetings in the all-time series since St. Francis Brooklyn began its program in 2019 with wins in the Terriers' inaugural season and 2021.
- Sciancalepore made four saves in the draw.   
- Sciancalepore, Smith, Genevieve Ryan (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammar School), Camryn Dees (Pickerington, OH/Pickerington HS North) and Karagh Tait (Swadlincote, Derbyshire, England/Derbyshire) each played all 90 minutes.
- Samantha Sharrocks (Nottinghamshire, England/The Bolsover School) made her first career start for the Broncs.

Broncs By The Numbers
- Smith became the Broncs' fourth different Rider rookie to score their first career goal this season, joining Miranda Elmer (Stockholm, Sweden/Taby Enskilda Gynasium), Margret Fridriksson (Reykjavic, Iceland/The Commercial College of Iceland) and Jasmine Sims (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora).
- St. Francis took an 11-9 edge in shots. However, the Broncs edged the Terriers, 6-5, in shots on goal.
- Both teams took five corner kicks.
- Makenzie Rodrigues (Seattle, WA/Forest Ridge) led the Broncs with four shots, including two on goal.
- Both of Anna Barkey's (Parker, CO/Legend [UTRGV]) shots were on target.
- Smith and Dees also put their only shots on target, while Russell's only shot just missed off the right post.

Up Next
The Broncs open league play on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Buffalo, NY, to take on Canisius. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
