CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Rider University baseball team was defeated in a non-conference game, 14-4, by the 17
th-ranked University of Virginia Tuesday evening. The Broncs fall to 6-8 on the season, while the Cavaliers improved to 15-1 on the year.
After holding the Virginia offense for the opening two frames, the Cavaliers broke through in the third. Following a pair of walks and a bunt single, Kyle Teel cleared the bases with a grand slam. Virginia added five in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-0.
Rider responded in the fifth with
Jordan Erbe (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South[UMass]) turning on a 1-2 pitch and sending it over the wall in left.
After the Cavaliers responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth,
John Volpe (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) hit a two-out single in the top of the sixth. The next batter,
Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood), delivered with a double that scored Volpe.
In the seventh, Virginia added another pair on a two-run homer.
Jake Barbiere (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) dropped a one-out single into right field, then stole second. He advanced to third when Volpe legged out an infield single. Two batters later,
Brendan O'Donnell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) ripped a base hit into center, scoring Barbiere.
The Cavaliers tacked on two more in the eighth.
In the ninth,
Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland Regional) hit a two-out pinch-hit double. After Barbiere drew a walk,
Socrates Bardatsos (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional) loaded the bases with a single through the right side. A high throw from third allowed Gilligan to score as Volpe reached, continuing the inning, but Virginia would record the final out one batter later.
