CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Rider University baseball team was topped by 17th-ranked Virginia, 12-3, Wednesday evening. The Cavaliers sweep the two-game series and improve to 16-1 on the season, while the Broncs fall to 6-9 on the year.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring in the first. Following a two-out walk, Virginia got an RBI-double to go on top early.
Rider responded in the second.
Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood) led off the inning with a walk.
Brendan O'Donnell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) followed, taking a pitch down in the zone and hitting it over the fence in left center.
In the bottom half, Virginia plated a trio, retaking the lead, 4-2. The Cavaliers added another in the third.
Rider found more offense in the fourth. With Skettini again leading off the inning, the catcher hit a double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After O'Donnell was hit by a pitch,
Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) hit an RBI single. Virginia turned to the pen and got out of the inning without any further damage, thanks in part to an inning-ending double play.
Virginia added four in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of two-run homers, then tacked on another run in the sixth. A two-run homer in the eighth capped the scoring.
