The Rider Department of Athletics proudly celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day each year. NGWSD began in 1987, evolving into an effort to bring attention to the achievements of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation, and the challenges and issues facing females in sports.
This year's celebration of National Girls and Women in Sport Day will take place on Sunday, February 12, 2023.
The women's basketball team will host Manhattan at 1 p.m. as part of the day's celebration. Prior to the game there will be a
FREE all-sports clinic with Rider's female student-athletes and coaches as well as the cheer and dance teams for girls ages 5-17. The clinic will run from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on campus in Alumni Gym, the basketball practice facility and the Student Recreation Center (SRC). The SRC is adjacent to Alumni Gym and will be used (schedule permitting).
This annual celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, and to realize their full power. The confidence, strength and character gained through sports participation are the very tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life.
"We get tremendous support for all of our women's sports programs from Rider faculty, staff, and alumni as well as our local community members so this all-sports clinic with our female student-athletes is our way to give back. In past years, we've gotten calls from parents telling us how much a young girl enjoyed learning about a new sport during the clinic," said Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Operations/SWA,
Karin Torchia. "The celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day also allows us to honor our women's teams and their accomplishments both athletically and academically."
Check-in and registration for the all-sports clinic will begin at 10:30 a.m. on February 12 and the actual clinic activities will begin at 11:00 a.m.
Pre-registration for the clinic is preferred, but not required, and girls can also arrive at Rider University on the day of the clinic to participate.
