What You Need To Know
- Rider opens the 2022-23 season at 2022 Sweet 16 qualifier Providence Tuesday night.
- The Broncs are coming off an up-and-down season that ended with a high of reaching the MAAC Championship Semifinals for the first time in a decade. The No. 9 seed, Rider upset top-seeded Iona in the quarterfinals to achieve the feat.
- Rider returns four starters and 74 percent of its scoring from a year ago, including Preseason All-MAAC First Team selection
Dwight Murray, Jr., who led the Broncs at 13.1 points per game, while leading the MAAC at 4.7 assists per game last year. His floater in the lane with seven seconds remaining sunk Iona in the MAAC Quarterfinals.
- Murray is joined by fellow returning starters and Preseason All-MAAC Third Team picks
Mervin James and
Allen Powell. James contributed 11.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season, while Powell averaged 12.1 points per game, while shooting 36.0 percent from long range. Â
- A fourth starter returns in
Ajiri Ogemuno-Johnson, who's back for his fifth year in Lawrenceville. Having already played 109 games for the Broncs, a healthy year would allow him to surpass Mike Ringgold's Rider-record 133 career games played. He averaged 8.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last year, starting all 31 games played.
- Rider also reloaded with transfers possessing Division I experience in
Adetokunbo Bakare (NJIT),
Allen Betrand (Towson/Rhode Island) and
Tariq Ingraham (Wake Forest), as well as Princeton, NJ, native
Zahrion Blue, who earned Conference Player of the Year at Division II Lincoln University last year.
- Back in the fold is senior big man
Tyrel Bladen, who missed all of last year with a knee injury, as are junior contributors
Nehemiah Benson and
Corey McKeithan.Â
- In addition, freshman newcomers
Anthony McCall and
Kami Young have been added to the mix, with walk-ons
Drew Kousaie,
Jack McFadden and
Nix Varano.
- The Broncs were picked third in the MAAC Preseason Poll.
- 11th-year Head Coach
Kevin Baggett's teams have posted a 161-152 record. Baggett won MAAC Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2018.
- Only John Carpenter (292) and Thomas Leyden (187) have more wins at Rider.
