HARTFORD, CT –
Dylan Lachmanen (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) won at both singles and doubles and
Giacomo Ghitti (Brescia, Italy/Marco Polo) scored the decisive singles win as the Rider University men's tennis team defeated Merrimack, 4-3, Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs end the Fall season at 2-0, while the Warriors fell to 1-3.
Though Lachmanen and
Jake Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) earned a 6-3 doubles win at No. 2 over Andre Singer and Pedro Mancini, the Warriors took the other two doubles flights and the point.
After Merrimack took the first two singles points at Nos. 1 and 4 to extend to a 3-0 lead, the Broncs battled back with singles wins from
Pablo Salar Carrera (Barcelona, Spain/IES Jaume Balmes) at No. 2,
Jaime de Jaraiz (Las Rozas, Spain/Rafa Nadal International School) at No. 3 and Lachmanen at No. 5 to set up Ghitti's decisive victory at No. 6 over Valentin Riveros, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
"Exciting way to close out the Fall," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "We fell into a hole early, but credit goes to Pablo, Jaime, Dylan and Giacomo for coming up big for us. Not the way we wanted to start, but I'm really proud of the way we responded with our backs up against the wall. We played big during critical points and limited mistakes when games were tight."
The Broncs return to action in the Spring semester, Jan. 21 and 22, when they face Army, Colgate and North Dakota in West Point, NY.
