Men's Tennis Splits Spring Openers

Broncs defeat Colgate, fall to North Dakota

WEST POINT, NY – Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) and Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) both won at singles and doubles against Colgate as the Rider University men's tennis team opened the Spring season with a 4-3 win over the Raiders and a 7-0 setback to undefeated North Dakota Saturday afternoon. With the split, the Broncs move to 3-1, while Colgate lost its first dual of the year and North Dakota improved to 4-0.

Against Colgate, the Broncs took the doubles point and the top three singles flights to earn the victory. Slattery made his Rider debut and won at both top singles and doubles, along with Tangri. Slattery and Tangri defeated Jack Selati and Max Litton, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles, before Slattery got past Selati at top singles, 6-3, 6-4. Tangri also earned the double win with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Litton.

Jake Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) and Dylan Lachmanen (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Mike Thomas and Dean Vlassis. Roger Martinez's (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) also defeated Thomas, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles to give Rider its decisive fourth point. The Raiders would take the remaining three singles flights, all in third-set 10-point tiebreakers.

Against a powerful North Dakota team, the Fighting Hawks quickly won Nos. 2 and 3 doubles by 6-1 scores to take a 1-0 lead. Straight-sets victories at all six singles flights made it a 7-0 sweep. The closest the Broncs came to a set victory was Slattery, who fell, 7-6, in the second set of his top singles match against Gerhard Sullwald. Slattery and Tangri were also competitive at No. 1 doubles, with their match against Sullwald and Nikita Snezhko being halted at 4-4 with the point already decided.

The Broncs wrap up play at West Point Sunday, when they face host Army West Point at noon.
