BUFFALO, NY – The Rider University volleyball team took a set Sunday afternoon, but would fall in four to Canisius. The Broncs fall to 4-13 on the season, including 2-5 in the MAAC. The Golden Griffins improve to 8-9 overall and 6-2 in league play.
Canisius slowly pulled away in the first. Leading 9-8, The Golden Griffins went on a 6-2 run to open up a 15-10 lead. Leading 18-14, Canisius won three-straight points, going on to take the set 25-18.
The Golden Griffins controlled the second set from the start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Leading 15-10, Canisius went on another 4-0 run to pull away. Down 24-16, Rider attempted to rally, scoring four points on the serve of
Kianny Santiago (San Juan, PR/Hudson Catholic (NJ)), but the Golden Griffins would get the side out they needed to close out the set.
Out of the break, the Broncs fired back, taking a 3-0 lead. The lead would be short lived however, with Canisius storming back with a 9-3 run to take a three-point lead of their own. Down 14-11, Rider went on a 3-0 run on the serve of Santiago to tie the set. Canisius again pulled ahead, earning a double-match point at 24-22, but Rider scored four-straight points, capped by back-to-back kills from
Morgan Romano (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) to win the set 26-24.
Canisius led for a majority of the fourth. Up14-12, the Golden Griffins scored four-straight to take an insurmountable lead. Canisius would go on to take the set 25-21.
