HEMPSTEAD, NY – The Rider University field hockey team closed out the regular season in style Sunday afternoon, defeating Hofstra 2-1. The Broncs improved to 13-5 with the win, while the Pride fall to 6-11.
The first quarter was largely uneventful, with the sides combining for just a single shot. Midway through the second, the Broncs came through on the corner.
Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra) made the insert to
Indy Zoontjens (Hilversum, Netherlands/Alberdingk Thijm College). Zootnjens fired a shot that was headed toward the left post, where Perales made the deflection into the back of the net to get the Broncs on the board first.
Minutes later the Broncs converted on another corner. This time it was
Abby Hartwell (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Regional) making the insert to Zoontjens. Zoontjens took the shot that this time was headed for the right post when
Maeve Riehman (Norristown, PA/Archbishop Carroll) made the deflection to extend the lead to 2-0.
Late in the second, Hofstra responded with a goal to make it 2-1 going into the break.
Midway through the third quarter, the Pride got their best look at tying the game with a corner. Hofstra got a clean shot off, but
Kaitlyn Tomas (Campbellville, Ontario/Appleby College) made the kick save to preserve the lead.
