STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Rider University men's tennis team won five-of-six singles matches to defeat Wagner, 5-2, Friday afternoon on the road. Paired with a women's victory over the Seahawks, Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia has run his career win total to 100. With the win, the Broncs open dual competition at 1-0, while the Seahawks are now 0-1.
"They've been working so hard for this moment," said Battaglia. "We've been through a lot of up's and down's lately, so it's nice to get this win. They came up big when it was looking bleak. The men lost the doubles point and found themselves down in three of the six singles matches quickly, but clawed back to find a way."
After the Seahawks swept the doubles point, the Broncs battled back with a strong singles performance.
Dhruv Tangri was up, 5-3, on Tejasvi Mehra in the first set at No. 1, before Mehra retired.
Pablo Salar Carrera (Barcelona, Spain IES Jaume Balmes) battled back from down a set and a 5-2 deficit in the second to Odeda Arazza, before evening the match, 7-6 (6), and winning his No. 2 match in the third set, 6-1.
Jaime de Jaraiz (Las Rosas, Spain/Rafa Nadal International School) earned a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Jai Sai Venkatramana at No. 4, while
Jake Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) got past Omar Loutfy, 7-6 (2), 6-0, at No. 5.
Dylan Lachmanen (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) defeated Aryan Gupta, 6-4, 6-2, to wrap up the win.
The Broncs wrap up the Fall season when they travel to Hartford, CT, to take on Merrimack in a neutral-site match on Nov. 13.
