Baseball Hammers Saint Peter's For Series Sweep

Broncs score 31 runs Sunday

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University baseball team scored 31 runs Sunday in completing a four-game sweep of Saint Peter's. The Broncs won Game 1, 17-3, before taking Game 2, 14-1. With the sweep, the Broncs improve to 17-13, while the Peacocks fall to 2-16.

The Broncs immediately jumped on the Peacocks in Game 1 with three runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed on the day. They followed with five in the third, a single run in the fifth and eight more in the sixth to build a 17-2 lead. Sean McGeehan (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) led Rider with three hits in the game, including a triple, while driving in three and scoring twice. John Volpe (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) doubled, tripled and drove in a team-high four runs in Game 1. All told, seven different Broncs had multiple hits as the Broncs piled up 17 hits in the game.

Game 2 was more of the same as the Broncs scored 14 runs, all in the first four innings, including a pair of six-run frames. Scott Shaw Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill High School West) opened the scoring with a three-run home run in the first, before Socrates Bardatsos (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional) plated two more with a triple and Brendan O'Donnell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) drove in the final run with a double.

After scoring an unearned run in the second, the Broncs scored six more on six hits and two hit-by-pitches in the third. Included in the production was a two-run double from Volpe. Saint Peter's scored its lone run on an RBI single in the top of the fifth.

- Frank Doelling (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) started Game 1 on the mound and earned the win, limiting Saint Peter's to two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk over 5.0 innings. He struck out eight.
- Joe Papeo (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) started Game 2 and picked up the win. He allowed just one earned run on five hits without walking a batter and striking out five in 6.0 innings pitched.
- The Broncs are idle next weekend and return to action Friday, May 14, when they begin a four-game set with Iona. First pitch of Game 1 in Friday and Saturday's doubleheaders is slated for noon.

Broncs by the Numbers
- Shaw and Volpe led the Broncs with four hits apiece on the day.
- Volpe had two doubles and a triple, drove in a team-high six runs and scored four more.
- Shaw scored a team-high five runs and drove in three. He doubled and homered in Game 2.
- O'Donnell went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI's and a run scored in Game 2.
- Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) added three hits, three runs and two RBI's.
- McGeehan also had three hits, four RBI's and three runs scored.
- Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood) chipped in with three hits, including a double, an RBI and four runs scored.
- Bardatsos and Lou Priolo (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) also had two hits apiece. Bardatsos contributed a triple, two RBI's and a run scored, while Priolo doubled twice, drove in two and scored twice.
- Jake Barbiere (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) also scored four times.
