LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) won at both singles and doubles as the Rider University women's tennis team swept La Salle, 7-0, Friday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs move to 2-3, while the Explorers, who played with just four players, are still in search of their first win at 0-7.
Garcia paired with
Sarah Cheverie (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/National Sport School [Montana State])
on a 6-4 win over Jazmin Walle and Aleks Nikolic at No. 2 doubles. Rider won by default at No. 3 to take the doubles point, while
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) and
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro H.S. North) led 5-4 at No. 1, before the skies opened up. With the doubles point already in hand, the match was halted.
Garcia went on to defeat Lauren Landstrom, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, while
Leila Koster earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Isa Leano at No. 1.
Ally Garofoli (Springboro, OH/Springboro) blanked Walle, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3, while Binder took down Nikolic, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4. The Broncs completed the sweep with wins by default at Nos. 5 and 6.
The Broncs return to action tomorrow, when they play host to Fairfield at 1 p.m.
