Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced),
Leila Koster and
Ally Garofoli (Springboro, OH/Springboro) each won singles matches, but the Rider University women's tennis team was edged by Fairfield, 4-3, Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-4 (0-3 MAAC), while the Stags improve to 4-6 (2-1 MAAC).
The Stags swept the doubles point to take the early lead.
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and
Sarah Cheverie (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/National Sport School [Montana State]) came closest to a win with a 7-5 setback at No. 2.
Melendez took a 7-5, 6-2, win at top singles over Amanda Nowak. Koster made it 2-for-2 atop the singles line-up with a 7-6, 6-0, win over Scarlett Hutchinson at No. 2. Garofoli defeated Sophia Prinos, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5. But the Stags took the remaining three matches in straight sets to claim the victory.
The Broncs return to action Tuesday, when they host Monmouth at 3:30 p.m.
