Baseball Swept at Fairfield Friday

Winsett collects four hits

FAIRFIELD, CT Jack Winsett (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) went 4-for-5 on the day, but the Rider University baseball team was swept at league-leading Fairfield Friday. The Stags took Game 1, 8-3, before enacting the mercy rule in Game 2 with a 10-0 win in seven innings. The Broncs slip to 10-6, while the Stags are now 12-0.

In Game 1, the Stags scored six runs in the first two innings. In the first, Fairfield had just two hits, but capitalized on three walks and an error to score four. A triple, a sacrifice fly and a solo home run to open the second pushed the Stags to a 6-0 lead. Two singles, a wild pitch and a groundout in the fourth made it a 7-0 Fairfield cushion, before the Broncs scored their only three runs of the day in the sixth. Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) singled home Shaw (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill High School West) for the first run before Winsett singled on the infield and an error on the play allowed Jordan Erbe (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) to score. Lou Priolo's (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) double then plated Lesch. But the Broncs would draw no closer and the Stags would add an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to take the 8-3 win.

In Game 2, Fairfield again scored four runs in the first inning. They did so on five hits and two walks, before adding another on a homer in the second. Following two scoreless frames, a pair of walks bit Broncs' starter Pete Soporowski (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) when Griffin Watson doubled them both home and knocked Soporowski out of the game after 4 2/3 innings.

Fairfield starter Jake Noviello kept the Broncs off-balanced throughout his complete-game shutout, limiting Rider to four hits and one walk in 7.0 innings. His offense added two runs in the sixth and walked it off with the Stags' 10th run in the seventh.
