FAIRFIELD, CT –
David Bermudez (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) led the Rider University baseball team with two hits on the day, but the Broncs were swept by league-leading Fairfield, 5-0 and 6-0, Saturday afternoon. With the losses, the Broncs fall to 10-8, while the Stags remain unbeaten at 14-0.
Fairfield scored three in the third in Game 1 on three singles and two walks to take a 3-0 lead. They'd add single runs in the fifth and sixth and the support would be more than enough for starting pitcher John Signore, who limited the Broncs to three hits without walking a batter in a complete-game shutout, striking out five.
The Stags again struck first in Game 2, scoring twice in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run from Sean Cullen. Fairfield tacked on another three runs on a two-run double and an RBI single in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Following four scoreless frames, the Stags added a run in the eighth on a hit-by-pitch, a groundout and two wild pitches to make it 6-0 after eight. Three Fairfield pitchers limited Rider to four hits and two walks in the second game.
