Baseball Splits at Monmouth Wednesday

Broncs snap Hawks' 12-game winning streak

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ Scott Shaw (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill High School West) went 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI's and two runs scored as the Rider University baseball team won Game 2 to earn a split at Monmouth Wednesday afternoon. Monmouth took Game 1, 3-1, before the Broncs won Game 2, 13-7. With the split, Rider moves to 10-4 on the year, while the Broncs snapped the Hawks' 12-game winning streak. Monmouth is now 12-2.

Monmouth scored first in the bottom of the first in Game 1 on a James Harmstead RBI single. The Broncs evened the score in the fourth when Brendan O'Donnell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Tyler Stockwell (La Plata, MD/La Plata High School).

Still 1-1 in the sixth, Harmstead picked up his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly and the Hawks tacked on another with a Robbie Holmes RBI single. The Broncs brought the tying run to the plate following a David Bermudez (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) double. But the Hawks closed out the victory.

In Game 2, Rider opened a 3-0 lead in the second on a two-run home run from Socrates Bardatsos (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional) and a solo shot from Scott Shaw (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill High School West). Monmouth got two runs back on a two-run Alex Barker home run, before Rider plated two more in the fourth. Bardatsos doubled and scored on Shaw's single. The second run scored on a double-play ball, making it 5-2 Broncs.

Monmouth scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, before Rider opened the game up with a five-run sixth. Shaw and Jack Winsett (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) delivered RBI singles, while Bermudez plated two more with another single. Stockwell drove in another on a would-be groundout that the Hawks' infield couldn't handle.

The Hawks whittled away at the Broncs' lead with two in the sixth and one more in the seventh to make it 10-7 Rider. The Broncs tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a Shaw sacrifice fly, a perfectly-placed Lou Priolo (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) bunt single down the third-base line and a Bermudez RBI single down the left-field line. Sebastian Williamson (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) pitched the final two innings, limiting Monmouth to one hit to pick up the save.
