POUGHKEEPSIE, NY –
Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, NY/Plainledge) reached safely in all seven of her plate appearances and
Elena Gonzalez (Ashburn, VA/Stone Ridge) added three hits and three RBI's as the Rider University softball team split a doubleheader at Marist Friday afternoon. With the split, the Broncs move to 12-12, while the Red Foxes are now 4-6.
The Broncs fell behind on a Caroline Baratta solo home run in the bottom of the first of Game 1. They'd immediately claw back with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Kaitlin Vazquez (Howell, NJ/Donovan Catholic) and Marigliano each contributed RBI doubles, while Gonzalez singled home the third run. Marist whittled the Broncs' lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame on Baratta's two-out RBI single. Following four scoreless frames, Rider would add insurance in the top of the seventh. Marigliano got on with a bunt single and scored on Gonzalez's two-run home run to center.
Game 2 started promisingly, with the Broncs putting a pair of runs on the board in the top of the first.
Grace Stansfield (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) singled home Marigliano, before Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch. But the Red Foxes would score 12 unanswered runs, including nine in the sixth inning, to enact the mercy rule.
